State Rep. Mims won’t seek 7th term

• Mims was first elected to the Legislature in 2003 to represent Southwest Mississippi in portions of Adams, Amite, Franklin, and Pike counties.

State Rep. Sam Mims announced Monday that he would not be seeking re-election to the Mississippi House of Representatives in the 2027 election cycle.

The six-term Republican served 12 years as House Public Health Chairman and the last four years as House Appropriations D Chairman.

“I consider these years representing the great people of District 97 as the professional honor of my life, and I am extremely grateful for this rare opportunity,” Mims said in a statement.

Mims was first elected to the Legislature in 2003 to represent Southwest Mississippi in portions of Adams, Amite, Franklin, and Pike counties.

“As I entered public service in 2004 at the age of 31, my wife and I had two daughters, and today, we have been blessed with not only those two daughters, but also a son, a son in law, and two grandsons,” Mims said Monday.

He thanked the people of District 97 for allowing him to represent them in the Mississippi Legislature for over two decades.

“There are too many people to publicly thank, but I could not have served six terms without my faith, as well as relying on God to grant me the wisdom and guidance that I needed everyday throughout the years,” Mims said. “I appreciate the confidence and support that my constituents gave me. It is extremely humbling to ask someone for their vote and trust me to make the right decision on so many important issues.” 

Mims went on to express his gratefulness to his wife and children “for their love and understanding of my challenging schedule as I always wanted them to be proud of my public service.” 

I could not have been in this position without the unwavering support and love from my wife of thirty years,” Mims said. “Amy and I look forward to beginning this next chapter in our lives, and we will always be grateful for the opportunity to serve the people of Southwest Mississippi.”

Mims will conclude his tenure in the Mississippi House in January 2028.

Qualifying for the 2027 election cycle begins January 2.
