Three Jackson mayoral candidates were scheduled to debate at a forum Thursday night, but one candidate walked out.
Frank Melton chose not to debate against James Covington, a man who stood in for Mayor Harvey Johnson until Johnson arrived. Melton walked out and told event sponsors that a representative for his campaign would finish the debate. After Melton left, Mayor Johnson came in and took over for Covington. When Melton’s representative arrived, sponsors told him he could not debate. Frank Melton supporters walked out claiming they were being treated unfairly.
Both Johnson and Melton will debate one on one Sunday afternoon, in a forum sponsored by WJTV News Channel 12, The Clarion Ledger, and the League of Women Voters.
