YP – Signed, Sealed & Delivered – Mississippi Legislature passes historic legislation for new flag
Sunday, the Mississippi Legislature finalized and passed a landmark bill that removes the current state flag and puts the procedure in place for a new one that will feature the words “In God we Trust”, which is currently emblazoned on the state seal, to be adopted. The bill now heads to Governor Tate Reeves, who has indicated that he will sign it.
The bill was passed in the House and the Senate before they left on Sunday by a vote of 91 to 23 in the House and 37 to 14 in the Senate.

The legislature has been deadlocked for days as it considers a new state flag. The argument over the 1894 flag has become as divisive as the flag itself and it’s time to end it. If they send me a bill this weekend, I will sign it.
We should not be under any illusion that a vote in the Capitol is the end of what must be done—the job before us is to bring the state together and I intend to work night and day to do it.

YP – Governor Tate Reeves Extends Safe Return Order to Protect Public Health Amid Rising Cases
Friday, Governor Tate Reeves extended his Safe Return order an additional week to protect Mississippians and limit transmission as cases rise in the state.
Consulting with Dr. Thomas Dobbs and our state health experts, Governor Reeves signed a new executive order today to extend the social distancing guidelines and restrictions under the Safe Return order until 8:00 AM on Monday, July 6.
“The threat is far from over. Extending our Safe Return order will give us much-needed time to assess this rapidly-changing situation and adapt our response to slow the spread,” said Governor Tate Reeves. “We’re taking every step possible at the state-level to protect public health, but we can’t do it alone. The only way through this pandemic is together. I urge my fellow Mississippians to do their part to help limit transmission in their communities and take care of each other.”

YP – MSGOP mourns Mounger’s passing
One of the founding fathers of the Mississippi Republican Party died at 94 on Friday.
Billy Mounger, born in Jackson in 1926 where he lived most of his life, was a graduate of West Point and the University of Oklahoma. He served our nation in the Air Force before striking out on his own in the oil and gas business, where his success allowed him to follow various philanthropic pursuits.

WLOX – Ocean Springs mayor lowers state flag after vote by legislature
The City of Ocean Springs made the move to be one of the first Coast cities to lower the state flag in regards to the historic vote in the legislature Sunday.
Mayor Shea Dobson took to social media Sunday to explain why now only the American flag flies outside of City Hall.
“Today the Mississippi Legislature votes to officially retire the 1894 state flag and put a new design on the ballot in November. By ordinance, the official state flag must fly at municipal buildings in Ocean Springs. Governor Reeves has indicated he will sign this bill, therefore I have ordered the retired 1894 flag removed from all municipal buildings,” Dobson said.
