Sen. Gary Jackson resigns from the Mississippi Senate effective June 30

By: Sarah Ulmer - June 1, 2020

On Monday, Senator Gary Jackson submitted his letter of resignation from the Mississippi Senate effective June 30. Jackson cited growing health concerns for his reason in leaving a 17 year stent in the Senate.

“It’s time, it’s tough for me to do this but June the 30th will be my last day,” said Jackson. “I appreciate the service of all of you and that’s all I’ve got to say.”

Jackson was met with a standing ovation by members as he left the podium.

“You leave quite a legacy in this state and within this body. On behalf of the people of the state of Mississippi we appreciate you,” said Lt. Governor Delbert Hosemann.

Senator Jackson represented District 15, Choctaw, Montgomery, Oktibbeha and Webster Counties. He was originally elected in 2004 and ran unopposed in his most recent campaign. Jackson was appointed as the chair of Municipalities and Vice Chair of Energy by the new administration.

“Senator Jackson, in his most recent election, ran unopposed—there is a reason for that. He is not afraid to take a position or stand up for his constituents, but he has always done so in a way which is respectful and thoughtful while remaining a leader. His colleagues gave him a standing ovation today in the Mississippi Senate, and it was well deserved.  We are grateful for his service to our State and we wish him the best in the future,” said Hosemann in a press release.
