Elizabeth Warren’s “town...

Elizabeth Warren’s “town hall” will exclude town’s media… and the townspeople

By: Courtney Ingle - March 18, 2019

Massachusetts Senator Elizabeth Warren has planned what was originally called a “town hall” for the Jackson State University Campus. The Clarion-Ledger is now reporting that tickets are available on a first-come, first-serve basis to JSU students, faculty, and ‘likely Mississippi democratic voters.”

Governor Phil Bryant responded to the news on Facebook Friday.

Local media can attend and write stories from a separate room at the event. Media coverage will be granted solely to CNN.

Jackson State University originally called the event a “town hall” and a “public forum” in its March 8 press release.

JSU President William B. Bynum Jr. said the forum would provide national exposure for the institution and encourage political engagement by the campus community and the public.

“As an institution of higher learning, our educators and staff aim to inspire civic participation and political discourse. This forum will become a classroom by educating students about government, campaigns and social issues that impact their lives as well as give students a chance to work alongside CNN staff to gain real-world experience. This week, JSU partnered with Mississippi’s Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann for its “Promote the Vote” exhibit. It further shows that Jackson State is working to keep communities involved and informed,” Bynum said.

Y’all Politics has reached out to the Mississippi Democratic Party for comment but has not yet received a response.
