Today’s bill of the day recommends that the Legislature be reduced in size, beginning with the 2023 statewide general election.
SB 2010 was authored by Senator Blackwell along with Senators Browning, Carmichael, Carter and Caughman. It would reduce the number of Representatives in the House to 99 and Senators to 42.
Currently the Senate cannot exceed 52 Senators and the House, 122 Representatives.
The bill reads:
SECTION 1. Section 5-1-1, Mississippi Code of 1972, is amended as follows: From and after the first Tuesday after the first Monday of January 2024, the number of Representatives shall be * * * ninety-nine (99) and shall be elected from ninety-nine (99) districts adopted by joint resolution as provided in Section 254 of the Mississippi Constitution of 1890.
SECTION 2. Section 5-1-3, Mississippi Code of 1972, is amended as follows: From and after the first Tuesday after the first Monday of January 2024, the number of Senators shall be * * * forty-two (42) and shall be elected from * * * forty-two (42) districts adopted as provided in Section 254 of the Mississippi Constitution of 1890.
The bill was referred to the Rules Committee.
