Senator Willie Simmons announces run for Central District Transportation Commissioner

By: Sarah Ulmer - January 17, 2019

Thursday at the Mississippi Department of Transportation, Senator Willie Simmons announced he will be running for Central District Transportation Commissioner.

Senator Simmons has represented Senate District 13 for the past 26 years. He has advocated for affordable, accessible, quality healthcare, quality education,
equal rights, better pay, and better job opportunities for all Mississippians

He has also served as chairman of the Senate Transportation Committee for the past 8 years, where he spearheaded efforts to secure increased funding for state and local
transportation infrastructure needs. Those included the negotiations of road and bridge money generated by a Mississippi State Lottery, legislation passed during the 2018 Special Session.

Simmons has been a champion for increased funding of Mississippi’s multimodal
transportation system to include ports, airports, rail, highways, roads, and
bridges.

The announcement comes not long after current Commissioner Dick Hall announced he would not be seeking reelection for his seat.
