Wicker Statement on Navy Block Buy Announcement

By: Sarah Ulmer - January 1, 2019

U.S. Senator Roger Wicker, R-Miss., Chairman of the Senate Seapower Subcommittee, issued the following statement today after the Navy announced its intent to block buy two Ford-class aircraft carriers:

“As the Chairman of the Seapower Subcommittee, I have long advocated for a block-buy for aircraft carriers. The Navy’s decision to buy two carriers at once will save taxpayers billions of dollars and stabilize the supplier base. Speeding up production of new carriers is essential to help build the 355-ship Navy.”

Wicker is a champion for a larger battle fleet. He spearheaded a provision in the FY19 National Defense Authorization Act that authorizes the aircraft carrier block buy. Wicker is the author of the “SHIPS Act,” which made achieving a 355-ship the official policy of the United States.
