Chris McDaniel eager to participate in proposed debates

By: Courtney Ingle - September 5, 2018

Republican U.S. Senate candidate Chris McDaniel today announced he has accepted invitations to three separate U.S. Senate debates in the month of October.

“I’ve always made myself open to questions from the people of Mississippi, and I challenge Cindy Hyde-Smith to join Mike Espy and me at all of these debates,” McDaniel said.

The first debate will be on October 4. Millsaps College and Mississippi Public Broadcasting are co-sponsoring the debate at the Gertrude C. Ford Academic Center on the Millsaps campus at 7:00 p.m.

“I can’t imagine why someone running to represent our state in the U.S. Senate — which used to be known as ‘the world’s greatest deliberative body’ — would avoid discussing the issues facing Mississippi, but sadly we’ve seen it before,” he said. “If Cindy Hyde-Smith skips these debates, it sends the message that the so-called elites are above accountability — that they don’t have to answer to the people.”

The second debate is scheduled for October 23, sponsored by the Clarion-Ledger, WLBT, the Mississippi Bar Association.

“If Cindy Hyde-Smith truly represents the America First Agenda, she shouldn’t have any problem appearing on a debate stage and defending her support for NAFTA, being a lifelong Democrat, a federal lobbyist, voting for Hillary Clinton, or being funded by open-border shills like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce,” McDaniel added.

Mississippi hasn’t had a senatorial debate in decades.

“I reject the establishment’s approach to representation — it’s a top-down approach that tries to take the people out of the equation,” McDaniel said, “and I hope Cindy Hyde-Smith will reject that elitist approach to ruling as well.”

A third debate was originally scheduled by the Mississippi Bar Association. It has since been canceled, however, the League of Women Voters has reached out about a potential third debate possibility.
