Primary Candidates comment on last nights election results

By: Sarah Ulmer - June 6, 2018

Results rolled in well after 10:00 p.m. last night for the Primary election in Mississippi. It looks like there will be some runoff elections before heading to the November ballot. Here are a few words from candidates that ran in the U.S. Senate and House races last night.

Representative David Baria pulled out in second in the Democratic U.S. Senate primary and will face Howard Sherman in a run off:

Thanks to all you Mississippi voters we are headed into a runoff that we can win! I want to congratulate all the other candidates in the race for a hard-fought primary in which we gave the voters a real choice. I intend to make clear over the next few weeks why Mississippi would be better off with a lifelong Mississippian who will fight for us in the U.S. Senate. Stick with me and we will have a strong Democratic nominee to take on Roger Wicker in November! – from his Facebook page

Howard Sherman, will be in a runoff for the U.S. Senate seat:

From little name recognition, to leading the popular vote. #MS made a statement tonight: we as a state are clearly ready for change, and deserve far better than the career politicians who have been “serving us.” Onto the run-off. #Sherman4Senate – from his Facebook page

Incumbent Congressman Steven Palazzo:

First, I want to thank everyone who came out and voted today in the Republican Primary.

Over the last 7 years, I believe everything I’ve been fighting for, voting for, and working toward shows that I am not only a conservative, but a proven conservative.

Since day one I have worked to ensure our priorities are met from securing the borders to strengthening our military and providing the very best care for our veterans. Alongside President Trump we are doing all of these things.

However, my work is far from done and I am ready to lead the way to another Republican victory in November and continue working hard for South Mississippi. – from his Facebook page

Incumbent Senator Roger Wicker will be moving forward on the Republican ticket:

“Gayle and I are grateful for the support of Mississippi Republican primary voters.  It’s an honor to serve our great state.  We will continue working hard to earn support from every corner of Mississippi in the general election.  We will keep talking to voters about what we’ve been able to accomplish and our plans for continuing to promote policies that will grow our economy, secure our borders, and keep Americans safe,” said Senator Roger Wicker.

Michael Guest, winner of the District 3 primary and headed to a runoff against Whit Hughes sent this letter to supporters:

Thank You. We’ve made it to the runoff election. Because of your support, in a field of six strong candidates, we led the field in the primary election today with 45% of the vote.

I want to congratulate the other candidates on running good campaigns, and no matter who you voted for today, I’m asking for your support in the upcoming runoff election on June 26—just three weeks from now.

Having worked for the past 22 years to make our communities a safer place to live, worship and raise a family, I want to use that experience and proven record of fighting for our conservative values, to now fight for Mississippi in the United State Congress.
We’ve got some serious challenges facing our country—like securing our borders, strengthening our military, protecting our Constitutional rights and reducing the size, scope and burden of government.

I want to tackle those issues and many more, so our state and country will grow stronger to giveour children and grandchildren more opportunities in the future.
Haley and I thank you again from the bottom of our hearts for your help over these past five months on the campaign, and I would be honored to have your help in the runoff election.

With your vote on June 26, together, we can make a real difference in Congress.

Whit Hughes is also in the Republican runoff for the 3rd District:

Shelley and I want to thank you for all of your support during the Primary Election. We could not have had such a strong showing throughout the district and advanced to the runoff without your efforts. Now it is time to get back to work and win the Runoff Election on June 26. Thank you again! – from his Facebook page

Democrat Representative Michael Evans will advance to the November ballot for the #MS03 election:

The AP press has now declared the winner for the primary and I received a congratulatory phone call from Mr. Aycox. Thank you, Mr. Aycox, for offering yourself for public office. I want to thank everyone who voted for me in the primary, and I look forward to carrying on our message and being a voice for all Mississippians, especially including the concerns of rural Mississippians, in the general election. My message of being a candidate for Congress who’s a voice of common sense for Mississippians in the #MS03 District will reach even further in the general election. My experience as a husband, father, farmer, fireman, ordinary common man, and #msleg State Representative who will listen to the people has prepared me to serve you. Thank you. #EvanstoDC #CountrytoDC #MS03 – from his Facebook page

Candidates Jeramey Anderson, Bennie Thompson, Randy Wadkins and Trent Kelly all ran unopposed in their House District elections.
