Shortly after Y’all Politics conducted a four way poll of about 1,000 likely Mississippi voters (which the McDaniel campaign labeled as “fake news” and a “dirty trick”), the U.S. Chamber also conducted a similar polling using live phone interviews through the GS Strategy Group of Idaho, of about 500. Both polls point to Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith leading the race against Democrat Mike Espy and Republican Chris McDaniel (Mayor Jason Shelton has since dropped out of the race).
Neither survey polled on the other, less known candidate, Tobey Bartee from Gautier who entered the race late in the game.
The Chamber Poll favorable ratings for Hyde-Smith at 41%, Espy at 36% and McDaniel at only 22%.
Readers should take the Chamber’s results with a grain of salt. They have deployed $750K in Mississippi in this race with a clear preference on the outcome. But it’s results do correlate with other independent polls like the Y’all Politics poll and the Mason Dixon poll recently commissioned.
Overall, the poll showed Hyde-Smith walking away with at least 30% of the vote Espy with 22% and McDaniel with 17%.
In the Y’all Politics poll, the outcome was very similar. It showed Hyde-Smith and Espy essentially tied and heading to a hypothetical runoff with McDaniel a distant third.
It also showed a win for Hyde-Smith in a runoff between she and Espy, Hyde-Smith taking 41.6% of the vote, Espy at 35.8% and left 22.6% undecided.
