He joins US Senate-designee Cindy Hyde-Smith, Chris McDaniel and Mike Espy as declared (but not yet qualified) candidates for the special election in November 2018.
Tupelo Mayor Jason Shelton announced on WTVA Tuesday morning that he will seek the US Senate seat formerly held by Thad Cochran.
Shelton is the second Democrat to jump in the race behind Mike Espy.
The mayor has never run for statewide office but feels he has a record to run on that will appeal to Mississippi voters.
Shelton says he will run as a fiscal conservative focused on job creation and improving the quality of life for all citizens. He says Washington needs someone who will roll up their sleeves and go to work for the people.
