Polling, polling, polling –...

Polling, polling, polling – Wicker +20 over hypothetical challenger #mssen

By: Editor - February 21, 2018

A new poll was published Wednesday by Louisiana based JMC Analytics and Polling.  They looked at several issues including the upcoming Senate race, which has a qualifying deadline next week.

The polling methodology was similar to the poll Y’allPolitics conducted last month.  However, this poll focused more on Republican primary voters and had a much smaller sample (500).

Here are a few things that stuck out.

  • Sen. Roger Wicker had a +21 net favorable vs. state Sen. Chris McDaniel whose net favorable was +5.
  • Wicker outpolled McDaniel 38/20, but digging deeper into the crosstabs, the more likely a Republican was to vote, the more likely he was to support Wicker and hence that gap widened.
  • They also tested fav/unfav of Tate Reeves (31/17) and then polled him against Lynn Fitch on a gubernatorial ballot.  He bested Fitch on the ballot test 21/12 with large amounts of undecideds.

The poll generally settled on the fact that, absent something unforeseen, Wicker is in pretty good shape if his only prospective opponent is McDaniel.

There’s more to dig out of the full poll and crosstabs (below).  Take the conversation to social media and tell us what you think!

Not to be outdone, McDaniel this week ran a poll of his own.  He asked his facebook followers whether he should either (a) file to run against Roger Wicker in less than two weeks or (b) run for the seat currently held by US Senator Thad Cochran.  By about 2:1, McDaniel’s followers said he should run against Wicker.

We can hope.
