Capitol Police ask for more funding to protect members of Congress and visitors
Earlier this week, the House passed a measure proposed by Rep. Gregg Harper, Mississippi’s Republican 3rd District congressman., to increase each lawmaker’s office budget by $25,000 for extra security through January 2018.
Harper, chairman of the House Administration Committee, said after the shooting that the panel would review security concerns.
“While federal law enforcement continues to investigate this attack, our committee has been listening to members and their concerns regarding the safety of their constituents, staffers, as well as themselves,’’ he said in a statement Tuesday.
Lawmakers can only use the extra security funding when they are on official business.
“We will continue to work closely with the Capitol Police and the House Sergeant at arms on any potential threats or security issues brought to our attention by members and their staff,” Harper also said in the statement.
