State Rep. Chism says Rep. Smith turned “the barn doors loose” on alcohol bills; tells crowd to call him, not expect an email

By: Magnolia Tribune - May 12, 2017

Infrastructure, tax cuts dominate discussion at luncheon

During a question-and-answer session at the end of the luncheon, Chism took aim at Smith, who is his desk mate in Jackson and the chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee for “turning the barn doors loose” on alcohol bills.

The worst bill, Chism said, is the go-cup bill, which creates entertainment districts in which patrons take alcoholic drinks out of bars and restaurants into public areas. …

…Chism often drew laughter from the crowd, such as when he was discussing how constituents can best reach him. He recommended his cell phone — which he recited aloud — and described himself as “technology challenged” when it came to using email or text messages.

“Email — Lord have mercy, we get a hundred of them a day,” Chism said. “If you think I’m gonna answer your email, you’re sadly mistaken, because I’m not.”

The legislators often poked fun at each other, such as when Smith said he sits to Chism’s left in the capitol because “no one is to the right of Gary Chism.”
