GEOFF PENDER: Seldom heard from in education debate: teachers
Legislative leaders have expressed an urge to put “more money in the classroom” with K-12 spending. Teachers appear to agree with this, but I wonder if they’re on the same page with what “in the classroom” means. The legislative leaders mean less money going to administration. The teachers appear to mean spending less of their own small salaries on basic supplies. (By the way, surprisingly few called for teacher raises in their comments. One said, “We know what we can get, and what we can dream about.”)
Perhaps surprisingly, a majority of teachers expressed satisfaction with their school’s administration, at least on the question, “Does the school’s administration enhance your ability to be a successful faculty member?” And numerous teachers surmised that their administrators were just as overworked and overwhelmed as they are.
