Dems counter state GOP on school formula, budget
As special GOP-led committees on Wednesday continued to look for ways to cut government spending and heard from experts on privatization, Democratic lawmakers held an alternative hearing one floor below at the Capitol on the need for more education and infrastructure spending and heard from an expert who recommended raising the state minimum wage.
The dichotomy wasn’t lost on Democratic Sen. Hob Bryan of Amory. It portends fierce partisan tax and budget battles in the 2017 legislative session that starts in January. It also portends major education, taxation and other policy and spending shifts, with Republicans now holding a supermajority after 2015 legislative elections.
