MSU president: More education = more income

“More education equals — they used the equals sign — more income,” Keenan said. “I like that. Education has a direct impact on income and lifestyle and livelihoods.”

Speaking at the MSU Stennis Institute of Government’s Capitol Press Corps luncheon, Keenum provide numerous statistics to back up this equation. He joked that his speech was “a data dump.”

Keenum said recent unemployment rates have averaged 2.8 percent for those with a bachelor’s degree, 2.4 percent for those with a master’s and 1.7 percent for those with a doctoral degree. Conversely, unemployment rates are 5 percent for those with some college, 5.4 percent for those with just a high school diploma and more than 8 percent for those with no diploma.

Median salaries, Keenum said, range from $1,100 a week for those with a bachelor’s degree to $493 a week for those with no high school diploma.
