Parents rally in Jackson in support of charter schools

By: Magnolia Tribune - July 28, 2016

Parents rally for free charter schools

A group of parents protested in downtown Jackson Wednesday to say that their children have a right to go to charter schools in Mississippi for free.

Charter schools receive taxpayer money but, unlike most public schools, they’re not run by a local board and they don’t answer to the state Board of Education. Instead, they are overseen by a state-level Charter School Authorizer Board.

A lawsuit filed by the Southern Poverty Law Center argues that charter schools violate the state constitution by making school districts share property tax collections with schools they don’t supervise or control.
