Hood: Legislature used ‘cover-up’ to hide budget holes
“If (the Legislature) was a company, I’d be trying to charge them with securities fraud,” Hood said. “… (The special funds bill) was a cover-up. The cover-up is always worse than the crime. The crime was $350 million worth of budget-busting tax breaks they’ve handed out to corporations. They didn’t want anybody to know what the impact is.”
Hood’s Monday comments followed his written legal opinions last week to several agencies. They also come as Gov. Phil Bryant debates whether to force lawmakers back into special session to deal with budget problems and looks for a replacement for the state’s fiscal officer, who is leaving June 30, the day before the start of the new budget year.
