Brandon could vote on hotel/motel tax under Rep. Baker’s bill

By: Magnolia Tribune - April 7, 2016

Brandon hotels could see tax for amphitheater

Hotels and motels in the city of Brandon could see a new tax after the House of Representatives passed a bill approving a 3 percent tax on proceeds from room rentals.

The tax levy must be approved by 60 percent of voters in an election, according to House Bill 1507. The funds will go toward an amphitheater on a 200-acre tract off Boyce Thompson Drive…

…Rep. Mark Baker, R-Brandon, authored the bill. He said the revenue from the tax will go toward construction and maintenance related to the amphitheater, which is part of the larger Rankin Trails project. “As part of Rankin Trails, there will be commercial hotel spots and stuff like that made available.”
