PERRY: The blame for the widespread rejection of refugees rests on Barack Obama

By: Magnolia Tribune - November 19, 2015

BRIAN PERRY/Blame Obama for refugees

I believe America and Mississippi should be welcoming to refugees who seek a better land and an opportunity to succeed and provide for their families. But I’m troubled at the prospect of 10,000 Syrian refugees entering our country. Not because I’m fearful of the Syrian people, but because I lack confidence in our own federal government.

Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves nailed this sentiment on Monday saying in a statement, “President Obama said last week ISIS was contained. The American people do not trust the Obama Administration to properly ‘vet’ Syrian refugees.”

The fear many Americans have at receiving Syrian refugees is not the result of close-mindedness or bigotry. The fear is not the lack of caring or Christian charity. The fear is a result of a failure in competency of the federal government. This criticism isn’t limited to the current administration; neither Republican President George W. Bush nor Democrat President Bill Clinton addressed these issues either.

When the federal government demonstrates competency in immigration and our President shows resolve against ISIS, the American people will be more accepting of Syrian refugees. The blame for the widespread rejection of refugees rests on Barack Obama. Not because he is a Democrat, but because he is the President of the United States and this is his responsibility.
