In a letter to Madison Mayor Mary Hawkins Butler dated Sept. 3, State Auditor Stacey Pickering wrote that, due to new pension reporting standards,”the auditors of PERS are required to perform audit procedures on-site at selected PERS employer sites.”…

…Will Craft, spokesman for the auditor’s office, said Monday that Pickering had no say-so over which city was chosen.

“Stacey doesn’t say who gets audited. He has absolutely no say in any of that,” Craft said. “It’s all done in the back of the house.”

Referencing Madison, Craft said, “If they’re selected by PERS, then we don’t have anything to do with that selection process.”
