Basketball player urges support for medical research

WASHINGTON – E.J. Galloway, an 18-year-old basketball star from Jackson, shifted his game Thursday from the court to the halls of Congress.

Galloway met with Republican Sen. Thad Cochran and other Mississippi lawmakers as part of his mission to obtain more federal funding for medical research.

“I want them (lawmakers) to listen to me,” said Galloway, a senior at Provine High School who suffered a heart attack last summer. “I have to speak up. I don’t want something to happen to others.”…

…Galloway’s heart attack almost killed him during a June basketball game. His coach, Willie Swinney, helped save him by performing CPR.

In addition to Cochran, Galloway met with Rep. Bennie Thompson, the only Democrat in the delegation, Republican Sen. Roger Wicker and Republican Rep. Gregg Harper.
