Final reading test cuts number of failing third-graders
More than 2,900 Mississippi students — 8 percent — are expected to repeat the third grade because they scored too low on the Third Grade Gate reading test.
That’s an improvement from the 15 percent that failed the first time on the exam, a linchpin of Gov. Phil Bryant’s push to improve public schools.
On Tuesday, he praised the progress. “The improvement we have seen from the first test to the final test proves that the extra help these students and teachers are receiving as a result of the Third Grade Gate is making a difference,” he said.
