Hattiesburg City Council rejects Mayor DuPree’s police chief nominee for third time

Hattiesburg council turns down police chief nominee

For the third time since January, the Hattiesburg City Council rejected a candidate for police chief brought forward for consideration by Mayor Johnny DuPree.

A motion was made Tuesday by Ward 2 Councilwoman Deborah Delgado to approve former Jackson Police Department Deputy Chief Ronald Sampson Sr. as chief, but the motion died for a lack of second from any of the other four councilmen.

Sampson, who currently assists the chief deputy at the Hinds County Sheriff’s Office, had been demoted twice in a short stretch between 2008 and 2009, once for an incident involving alleged sexist and racist remarks and another for discrepancies in a fuel card program he oversaw.

DuPree said Sampson had been cleared in both instances, and that the council chose to focus on the accusations instead of the outcome.
