Religious freedom law goes into effect, sparking protests
Protesters said they are angry about the Mississippi Religious Freedom Restoration Act.
“To be quite honest with you, I’m concerned, I’m scared and I’m angry,” Amelie Haun said.
Protesters said the law could be used to allow businesses to discriminate against religious minorities, and the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender people.
“It violates the rights of Americans,” Haun said. “It violates our (First Amendment and 14th Amendment) rights.”
The law says the government cannot put a substantial burden on religious practices and added “in God we trust” to the state seal.
“This is not a discriminatory law as some people have tried to erroneously make it. This law would just be a shield for believers,” Sen. Phillip Gandy, the author of the bill, said in March.
