Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves opposing budget cuts to Mississippi National Guard

RELEASE: LT. GOV. REEVES JOINS EFFORT TO OPPOSE NATIONAL GUARD CUTS

JACKSON – Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves joined other lieutenant governors around the country to oppose proposed budget cuts to the Mississippi National Guard.

“Mississippians have seen first-hand why the National Guard is critical to each state,” Lt. Gov. Reeves said. “These brave men and women have led search-and-rescue missions and provided support in Louisville, Tupelo and Rankin County in the aftermath of this week’s tornados. The National Guard is agile and ready to respond in times of disaster, such as after Hurricane Katrina and the historic Mississippi River flood in 2010.”

Reeves joined 40 leaders of states and territories in a letter to President Obama noting various proposed National Guard cuts would return funding to a pre-9/11 level. A U.S. Senate subcommittee convened hearings on the issue Wednesday. The National Guard is critical to peace and security at home and abroad, Reeves said.
