Congressional delegation tours state
AUBURN, Miss. (WTVA) — Junior and Shirley Spencer were inside their mobile home when a tornado blasted through Auburn on Monday.
“We was in there. It brought it down all around us,” said Junior Spencer.
“I was praying to God to be with us, and he was,” said Shirley Spencer.
So many on their Lee County road and well beyond have lost everything, but they are determined to move forward.
“We’re gonna live to rebuild and see another day,” said resident Lisa McCollum.
Congressman Alan Nunnelee says he had to see the damage in person.
“Pictures that we were watching from Washington, D.C., don’t do it justice,” said Representative Nunnelee.
A fact-finding tour on Wednesday is how members of Mississippi’s congressional delegation hoped to reach out to all those affected in the form of a federal disaster declaration.
“We’re gonna take a message back to Washington, D.C., that this is definitely a disaster that qualifies for federal assistance,” said Senator Roger Wicker.
“We’re here to be sure that assistance is getting where it needs to be, and we’ll do everything we can to provide additional appropriations if that seems necessary,” said Senator Thad Cochran.
