Candidates lining up for Jackson mayor special election

By: Magnolia Tribune - March 11, 2014

Johnson first to announce run for Jackson mayor; several others showing interest

The race to find out who is running for Jackson’s next mayor could gain momentum Tuesday afternoon if another potential candidate throws his name into the mix.

Melvin Priester Jr., the acting Jackson City Council president, has said he will announce his plans at 2 p.m., though he stopped short of saying he will run for mayor.

On Monday, former Mayor Harvey Johnson Jr. became the first person to announce his candidacy in what could shape up to be a crowded field for the April 8 special election to fill the unexpired term of the late Mayor Chokwe Lumumba.

Lumumba died Feb. 25 of what the coroner termed natural causes.

Meanwhile, Jonathan Lee issued a statement saying he will not seek the mayor’s office.
