COCHRAN LOOKS TOWARD 2014 FARM BILL IMPLEMENTATION

New Five-Year Farm Bill Now Law – Reforms Agriculture, Conservation & Nutrition Policies

WASHINGTON, D.C. – U.S. Senator Thad Cochran (R-Miss.), ranking member of the Senate Agriculture, Nutrition and Forestry Committee, today issued the following statement regarding the enactment of the Agricultural Act of 2014, the new five-year farm bill that was signed into law Friday.

“Implementation of the 2014 farm bill will create opportunities for farmers, ranchers and foresters to improve American agriculture. Producers and consumers of food and fiber will benefit from the reforms included in the new law, as well as from the certainty it provides. The new farm bill is an important achievement, particularly for the rural communities that sustain agricultural production in Mississippi and throughout the country.”

With major reforms to agriculture, conservation and nutrition policies, the Agriculture Act of 2014 will save taxpayers nearly $17 billion, according to the Congressional Budget Office. The farm bill baseline was also trimmed by $6 billion from sequestration, resulting in an overall savings of $23 billion.
