What is odd is that the chairman of one of the two education committees in the Legislature would seek to shorten the time some of the nation’s most poorly educated students spend in school.
School districts already have the means to deal with “calendar issues” if it is “not economically feasible or practicable” to stay in session at least 180 days. And there are other opportunities in the school year to make up for days lost to weather or other unavoidable or unforeseen events.
As for the new law requiring that the school year begin no earlier than the third Monday in August, that requirement can also be accommodated without shrinking the academic year by a week.
All in all, HB 75 is a piece of proposed legislation that we hope doesn’t graduate into law.
