HUD urges Mississippi to negotiate remedy in Port of Gulfport funding dispute
Federal officials are again urging Mississippi to negotiate a remedy because they say the state failed to recruit low-income people to work on Hurricane Katrina recovery at the Port of Gulfport.
Sara Pratt, deputy assistant secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, said in a Dec. 13 letter to Mississippi officials that the state needs to negotiate promptly or face action. The action could include cutting funds, though the letter did not specifically mention that.
The latest letter is part of an ongoing dispute between HUD and the Mississippi Development Authority over spending $581 million in federal money at the port to recover from the 2005 hurricane.
