Sam R. Hall: Hood, Presley are Democrats’ hope for 2014

While nothing has been set in stone, U.S. Sen. Thad Cochran has indicated and several have speculated that his decision will come by Thanksgiving. Of course, as a colleague pointed out, just because he makes his decision this week doesn’t mean he’ll announce it.

With his decision still unknown, speculation about next year’s U.S. Senate race can continue. Much ink has been spilled and hot air expelled over the chances of state Sen. Chris McDaniel, R-Ellisville, in his pursuit of the Republican nomination. Can he defeat Cochran, or will he instead face a wide-open primary that could include the likes of U.S. Rep. Gregg Harper, Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves, Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann and State Auditor Stacey Pickering.

So instead of further musings over a GOP primary, let us turn to the growing interest of Democrats who see a sliver of hope if Cochran retires. Their rationale is that a bloody Republican primary could allow the right Democrat to win.
