AP attempts to cast aspersions on outlet mall

State-subsidized outlet mall to open in Pearl

Some stores were making their first sales Wednesday at the new Outlets of Mississippi, a day before Gov. Phil Bryant cuts the ribbon on the $80 million retail center in Pearl.

It was what retailers call a soft opening, where stores open before the official date as a dress rehearsal. Some stores, like the Banana Republic Outlet, kept doors locked while workers rushed to stock shelves. But a few customers were prowling for bargains at Saks Off Fifth, and by 11:15 a.m. the Sunglass Hut was ringing up its first sale.

That meant the first sales taxes were being collected, so the first incentives are flowing back to Spectrum Capital, the Yates Cos. affiliate that built the $175 million development along Interstate 20 that includes the mall, the Mississippi Braves’ Trustmark Park, a Bass Pro Shops store, hotels and restaurants.
