Auditor’s report lists Mississippi legislative expenses

Mississippi spent nearly $7.5 million for salaries and expenses of state lawmakers during the 11 months that ended in early April, according to a new report from the state auditor’s office.

That breaks down to nearly $5.2 million for the House of Representatives and $2.3 million for the Senate.

The report is dated June 7 but was released to the public on Wednesday. It covers expenses from May 4, 2012, the end of that year’s regular legislative session; through April 7, 2013, the end of this year’s session.

When all seats are filled, the House has 122 members and the Senate has 52. There were several vacancies during the past year because of deaths or resignations, and several lawmakers received significantly lower than average compensation because they served only part of the 11 months.
