Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves today thanked the Mississippi Senate for approving legislation to protect the rights of Mississippians to possess permits to carry concealed weapons.
“Gun owners in Mississippi have a right to privacy and shouldn’t be made to feel like criminals for exercising their Second Amendment rights,” Lt. Gov. Reeves said. “I’m proud the Senate has passed several strong pro-gun bills that provide real protection for gun owners.”
House Bill 485 ensures information related to concealed carry permit holders is exempt from the Mississippi Public Records Act. Law enforcement will be allowed to share information regarding applicants and permit holders to determine eligibility to have a concealed carry permit.
House Bill 2 clarifies state laws allowing Mississippians to carry concealed weapons. The Senate passed a similar measure, Senate Bill 2212, earlier this month.
The National Rifle Association praised Reeves and the Mississippi Senate earlier this month for passing legislation to further strengthen Second Amendment rights. Those bills, which were sent to the Mississippi House, were:
• Senate Bill 2212, by Sen. Giles Ward, R-Louisville, corrects vague and problematic language in Mississippi’s firearm carry laws.
• Senate Bill 2048, by Sen. Ward, expands the opportunities for hunters to use crossbows in archery and primitive weapons seasons regardless of physical ability.
• Senate Bill 2647, by Sen. Briggs Hopson, R-Vicksburg, requires reporting of firearm-purchase disqualifying mental health records to the National Instant Check System.
