Lobbyists ranging from powerful Washington D.C. area law firms, former Gov. Haley Barbour and others who have been pushing hard to get charter school legislation passed in the upcoming 2013 Mississippi legislative session are gearing up for another fight.
Speaking in Southaven recently, Gov. Phil Bryant lent his support to the charter school effort. He joins Lt. Gov. Tate Reeves and a chorus of other top Republicans who have come out in support of charter schools.
Bryant said his support was to give students in failing school districts a chance to receive a better education.
Last session, opponents of charter school legislation which was largely unaccountable and allowed virtual charter schools with little or no regulation or guidelines was defeated in the House Education Committee.
