Mississippi unions throw support to Kemper coal plant

GULFPORT — Local and state union leaders at a press conference Tuesday announced their support of Mississippi Power Company’s Kemper County coal plant, which they had opposed because union members were excluded from the construction project. Curtis Murphy, business manager for the IBEW Local 903 in Gulfport, announced an agreement with MPC’s parent company Southern Co. that will provide for at least 1,000 union jobs in the state.

Murphy said the Industrial Partnering Labor Alliance provides for construction and maintenance by union employees on numerous plants throughout the state, including Plant Watson in Gulfport, Plant Daniels in Escatawpa and the Peaker Unit at Chevron in Pascagoula.

“This partnership will ensure that local citizens work on these projects and work performed is completed correctly,” said Murphy.
