More than 30 Democratic lawmakers, along with state party leaders, gathered at the Capitol on Tuesday, and as their meeting was breaking up, Republican House Speaker Philip Gunn arrived in the foyer outside the meeting room.
A couple of the lawmakers jokingly asked if Gunn had decided to switch parties.
Gunn responded with his own joke: “Y’all are the party of the people, inclusiveness, the big tent. Why’d you have the door to your meeting locked?”
Mississippi Democratic Trust Director Brandon Jones told Gunn: “That’s all changed now. We even have a secret handshake.”
