Phillips, Coleman race in northern district the one to watch
The most interesting race in Mississippi this year features Josiah Coleman and Richard “Flip” Phillips vying for a seat on the Mississippi Supreme Court being vacated by retiring Justice George Carlson Jr.
Phillips has divided both the business community and the trial lawyer community to create what appears to be a diverse base of support that perfectly illustrates the old axiom, “Politics makes strange bedfellows.”
For Coleman’s part, he is largely an unknown entity within the district. He faces an uphill battle because of his lack of experience, and he’s not made the connections across the district that come with years of practicing law in rural Mississippi. His name, however, is well known in that part of the state. Coleman is the grandson of former Gov. J.P. Coleman, and his father was a federal judge.
