WLOX Editorial: We applaud Governor Phil Bryant for his port involvement

Hurricane Isaac proved that the Port of Gulfport can safely evacuate trailers and other equipment in advance of a storm. We now understand why Governor Phil Bryant is questioning whether the port should continue with a post Katrina plan to raise the port’s elevation to 25 feet.

The governor says it would be better to use the hundreds of million of dollars going toward elevation, to instead deepen the port’s Channel. Currently the depth of the port is 36 feet and port officials would like to see the port deepened to at least 45 feet. However that process could take up to 15 years because of the permitting process.

So in the near term local and state officials must find other products to ship or bring into the port. Maybe ship chickens out of our port again.
