Mississippi’s immigrant debate lacks agreement

Discussions among legislators, statewide elected officials, business owners and citizens with pertinent interests have not reached agreement about what, if anything, Mississippi needs to do to reform the state’s illegal immigration statutes.

While Republicans control the Legislature, where the issue is expected to be debated again in the 2013 session, dissent from a hard line is clearly strongly bipartisan, including voices from the state’s business community and significant sectors of law enforcement.

As the Associated Press’s Emily Wagster has written in an analysis of the situation published in Monday’s Daily Journal, a recent House Judiciary B Committee hearing ran 4 1/2 hours and virtually spanned the spectrum of opinions, pro and con.
