Demolition begins on Unsafe Property adjacent to Local School
Clean up to promote a safer environment for school children
Hinds County Officials and Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann held a joint press conference to announce the clean-up of a blighted tax forfeited property located at 906 Maple Street, directly across from Lanier High School.
“We want our high school students to leave Lanier thinking about their bright future and not dilapidated housing,” says Secretary of State Delbert Hosemann.
The State of Mississippi received the property in August 2008 for nonpayment of taxes. The parcel is approximately 45’ x 125’ with an estimated value of $4,500. The State of Mississippi will transfer the property to Hinds County at no cost, so it may be utilized as a green space and support Lanier. As part of the transfer, Hinds County has agreed to demolish the abandoned structure and clean up the property grounds.
“Abandoned tax forfeited properties have the potential to become havens for crime,” says Secretary Hosemann. “We are committed to working with local officials across the State to clean up these blighted areas to promote a safer environment for our school children and our communities.”
“Recently, the Secretary of State’s Office sold or transferred over 100 tax forfeited properties in Greenville,” adds Secretary Hosemann.
