DeSoto lawmakers glad they opposed charter school measure
Local legislators Monday defended their opposition to a charter school measure that died during this year’s session.
State Rep. Pat Nelson, R-Southaven, told the DeSoto County Retired Education Personnel Association that he considered it a “badge of honor” that he and other DeSoto legislators were criticized for not supporting the charter school bill.
“Those of us that helped kill a very flawed charter school bill,” Nelson said, “were smeared, we were talked about, but we took it as a badge of honor. It meant that we stood up for the parents, the kids and the teachers back home.”
