Bill proposes late start for Mississippi schools

Mississippi public schools will open no earlier than the third Monday in August if House members go along with legislation state senators approved Tuesday.

Senators, by a 29-21 vote, approved the bill that supporters said could generate up to $200 million more a year from tourism, especially along the Gulf Coast, if schoolchildren were allowed to remain out of school longer in the summer and continue working their tourist-related jobs or spend time and money at the region’s summer-fun locales.

The House bill would have extended the school year’s start to the fourth Monday of August or later, but the version that senators approved on a 34-14 vote would delay the start of school until the third Monday of the month beginning with the 2014-15 school year.
