Bryant sells state jet, proceeds to state troopers
Gov. Phil Bryant has sold the state jet for $2 million and wants the proceeds to fund new vehicles for state troopers.
“I am pleased we have turned what was a non-essential expense into much needed funding that can be directed to a priority area such as the Mississippi Highway Patrol,” Bryant said. He said many trooper vehicles have more than 100,000 miles on them, with high maintenance costs and potentially jeopardizing troopers’ safety.
Extensive use of the state jet by Bryant’s predecessor, Haley Barbour, was a sore subject with some lawmakers, who attempted to pass legislation to sell it during Barbour’s administration. Critics said Barbour’s use of the jet appeared to include political and other extracurricular travel.
