Mississippi governor, attorney general work on lawyer bill
Republican Gov. Phil Bryant is working with Atty. Gen. Jim Hood, the state’s top elected Democrat, on legislation that would let state agency and department heads pick their own outside lawyers instead of using those from Hood’s office.
Bryant said Friday that he plans to sign the bill, regardless of how it is changed.
During House debate on the legislation last week, Democrats charged that the bill was aimed at gutting the power of the Attorney General’s Office and reducing Hood’s influence across the state.
