Gov. Bryant sees Port as potential ‘game-changer’

Phil Bryant said Monday after a tour of the Port of Gulfport he understands the potential the planned expansion has for job creation, but his office would focus on making sure as many new positions there result as possible.

The Hurricane Katrina damaged site is being restored and raised to a 25-foot elevation in an effort to prevent future storm damage. The port is expected to receive over $600 million in Katrina relief from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Community Development Block Grant program and officials have already used some to develop a more-ambitious long-term expansion plan, which is under review by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers.
