Social media will be critical to political futures
Social media is a powerful new technology, which elected officials are beginning to harness to communicate instantaneously with constituents. It’s also becoming an important weapon in campaign arsenals.
Many state and local officials have Facebook and Twitter accounts, as well as personal websites. Some rarely use them. Others, such as state Rep. David Baria, D-Bay St. Louis, and freshman state Sen. Brice Wiggins, R-Pascagoula, use Facebook and Twitter regularly.
Wiggins used social media heavily during his campaign to unseat longtime Sen. Tommy Moffatt, R-Gautier. He posted campaign commercials on Facebook, which quickly spread through the social network. Wiggins said although he may have only about 1,000 Facebook friends, those people have their own large networks, which allows the information to get around very quickly.
